Weekend Reading: E3 2012 Was Not a Disappointment in Any Way

Even if E3 2012 takes place for just three days in June in Los Angeles, to hardcore gamers it represents the biggest event of the year, a magical period when the future is wide open and anyone can take a peek at the biggest announcements linked to hardware and software for the coming year and beyond.

Many came away disappointed from this year’s edition of the show because neither Sony nor Microsoft announced new hardware platforms or gave any hint about them, focusing instead on the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, showing all the games that they would receive during their twilight.

I understand that many gamers care deeply about hardware and wanted to see something new and impressive from Sony and Microsoft, along with a cooler demo for the Wii U than Nintendo was able to offer this year.

But it doesn't make sense to focus just on hardware and its possibilities when such a range of interesting games is being shown off. These are the kind of experiences that make the final years of the current hardware generation better than it was for the PS2 and the original Xbox.

Speaking from experience, a few titles on the floor of E3 will impress many of us when they come out: Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Far Cry 3, FIFA 13, Crysis 3, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, God of War: Ascension, Dragon Commander.

There are also the usual big hit suspects, from Call of Duty: Black Ops II to Dead Space 3 and Halo 4, to keep us occupied well into 2013.

Until then, it’s pretty clear that we’ll have at least announcements for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720 and everyone can be a little happy with the announcement before the expectations become a problem, as all developers take their time before actually launching the devices.
