Thief 4 Needs to Be Better than Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Thief 4 might be largely an enigma at the moment, but it seems that the Eidos team working on it has drawn quite a bit of inspiration from the success of last year’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Stephane D’Astous, the overall leader of the Eidos Monreal studio, has told the Official Xbox Magazine that, “The success of Deus Ex put two things in perspective for us. Our second game needs to be as good or better than Deus Ex, and it gave a lot of credibility to the studio.

“Putting a successful game under your belt brings more confidence and credibility, and less red tape. We don’t want to be seen as a one trick pony.”

The core gameplay of the Thief series is based around stealth and quick kills, and the designer says that the team has kept the same base while also looking for ways to expand the experience and draw in more players.

D’Astous says, “In Deus Ex, we really wanted to give different options in how to play, and we will want to bring a certain level of that to Thief. I think if people spend $60 on a game, they want more than corridor shoot shoot, corridor shoot shoot. People are asking for a little more, so give them the choice of how they want to play.”

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was praised by gamers for how well it captured the essence of the franchise while also introducing a number of modern concepts.

The game allowed players to approach a situation via stealth and quietly accomplish their objectives but also to face enemies head on and shoot up a location to get to a target.

Thief 4 has only recently been officially announced after a long period of rumors linked to it and the Eidos Monreal team is not yet willing to talk about a potential launch window or the platform the game will be delivered on.
