Sumatran Rhino Baby Born in an Indonesian Sanctuary

In almost a century, Ratu is only the fourth Sumatran rhinoceros mother to successfully deliver a baby in captivity.

Thus, this past Saturday, the staff at the Way Kambas National Park in Indonesia were glad to be acquainted with a brand new male baby Sumatran rhinoceros.

As conservationists explain, Sumatran rhinos are presently an endangered species, primarily because of poaching and because of the destruction of their natural habitat.

Given the fact that there are so few of them left in the world, the baby's father, Andalas, had to be brought in all the way from a zoo in Ohio and only then introduced to the mother, Ratu.

Speaking about this event, Indonesia's forestry minister declared that “It's really a big present for the Sumatran rhino breeding efforts as we know that this is a very rare species which have some difficulties in their reproduction.”
