Sony Believes Cloud Gaming Is the Future

Sony has discussed the topic of cloud gaming and, while it has declined to say if it’s actually going to acquire one of the leaders in the field – Gaikai –, it has stated that, through one form or another, cloud gaming will be the future of the industry.

Slowly but surely, gaming is changing and, while there are still plenty of people who get physical discs from stores, some are now turning to digital distribution across many platforms.

What’s more, some companies are taking things much further, as OnLive and Gaikai are offering cloud gaming experiences in which people can just pay for a game and then play it anywhere they want, from a PC or Mac to dedicated micro-consoles or even tablets.

While these services are still in their early stages, Sony is convinced that cloud gaming is the future, saying that it’s “absolutely inevitable that it's going to be a part of what everyone does," through the voice of Scott Rohde, the vice president of its Worldwide Studios.

The ability to access content, including games, from anywhere and by using any device is going to become a mandatory feature in all new services, according to him.

"It just makes sense,” he told GamesIndustry. “And so, over the next five years, you're going to see everything evolve to that state because people want access to their data anywhere."

Sony was expected to announce the acquisition of Gaikai, one of the leaders in the cloud gaming, at E3 2012, but the company declined to talk about its actual future plans.

"Will there be a streaming service? Will there be a partnership? I'm not going to answer those questions right now,” he said. “But, like I've said ten times, like a broken record, the industry is always evolving.”

Have you tried out these cloud gaming experiences or are you still content with regular retail ones?
