SoaSE Rebellion Diary: I am a TEC Faction Loyalist

The biggest change introduced by the new Sins of a Solar Empire – Rebellion is the move from three factions based upon simple racial distinction, the TEC, Vasari and Advent, to a new system where the three races are still important, but they each get a political orientation, Loyalist or Rebel, which leads to a total of six factions for gamers to try out.

It’s a little confusing at first, especially for those ten minutes whey you survey the versions and find out what each of them bring to the table.

My advice is to drop the idea of min-maxing and of choosing a “best” faction and to first choose simply by taking the race you most liked in the official game, in my case the Trader’s Emergency Coalition (it’s the flimsy, yet engaging backstory that won me over) and then see which one of their two flavors mostly appeals to you.

I decided to go with the Loyalist faction of the TEC, people who, after decades of conflict with the aliens, have decided that isolationism and solid defenses are the best way to survive.

They get quite a few bonuses as long as they are fighting in their own space, and they also get boosts to the abilities of their starbases, even allowing them to fortify the most contested systems with two structures, presumably focusing one on direct combat and the other on support powers.

Even their Titan is defensive-minded, which is surprising, given that Ironclad Games has introduced them specifically to offer more offensive opportunities, and has one quite useful power than preserves his own fleet.

If there’s one critic I would like to level at the new faction system is that Ironclad Games did not come up with some more expressive and unique names for the new six factions, if only in order to develop the fiction of Sins a little.
