Small Teams Are Key to Innovation at Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts might be a huge publisher, but the game ideas that go into full production are those that small teams create in order to impress the leaders and then secure the resources they need for the process.

Patrick Soderlund, who is the current leader of the core games division at Electronic Arts, has told Gamasutra that, “The idea of it is test things, and either continue or kill them early. Most of the ideas will be probably not the right ones.

“But then one out of 10 or 15 ideas will be the right one - that's something that we're going to say, 'We like that. Continue, and now we're going to start funding it.”

The developer says that this is what happened when he initially started working at DICE and his team managed to push for the development of a Battlefield project that could be played online.

Soderlund believes that this kind of process will allow EA to harness the innovation of its developers and create better video games.
