Paradox Officially Cancels Magna Mundi

Paradox Interactive announced that it has canceled development on Magna Mundi, a game evolved from a popular mod that was supposed to be launched during the fall of this year.

The official statement from Mattias Lilja, who is (or was?) the executive producer working on Magna Mundi, reads, “Today Paradox Interactive decided to cancel Magna Mundi. It will not see the light of day under the current set up: Universo Virtual (UV) will not be part of this project any more.“

He also offered reasons, saying that the team that worked on the game at Universo Virtual failed to show any sort of progress with the code base over the months that passed and only introduced new issues in newer versions.

The executive also talked about a lack of trust between the two companies and of internal conflict between the people who were working on Magna Mundi, with some leader of the project trying to push it along, while others did everything in their power to stop them.

Carlos Gustavo Benavente, the leader of the developers, says that an official statement detailing his side of the story will soon be released and his statement seemed to indicate that the Magna Mundi team was ready to continue development and find another way of releasing the game.

Magna Mundi was supposed to take the engine that powered Europa Universalis III and add more mechanics linked to empire management, trade and politics.

The concept started life out as a mod and it proved so popular with the EU III community, that Paradox Interactive decided to offer them the keys to the engine and allow them to create a full-fledged title.

At the moment, Paradox is focused on Crusader Kings II, which is set to get a full expansion which deals with Islamic characters and adds new mechanics and gameplay options.
