Most Meebo Products Shutting Down in One Month

Unsurprising perhaps, given Google's past record and the way this type of acquisitions usually go, but Meebo has already announced that it is shutting down several products, and soon.

The web IM client, Meebo Messenger, has one month to live, and so do the sharing product and the Meebo Me widgets. All mobile apps are being closed down as well.

The only thing that is surviving is the Meebo Bar, the annoying bar you can see at the bottom of some websites. Meebo says that not only is it not shutting it down, it's going to continue to support and improve it.

When Google and Meebo announced the acquisition, they made it clear that the core team is going to work on Google+. Meebo had already laid off quite a few people, prior to the acquisition, and it was unclear just how many people were left.

It seems that Google's acquisition still largely targeted the talent, but since Meebo was quite big and already had several products as well as a lot of non-engineering staff, some adjustments had to be made, i.e. fire everyone not needed and continue to support the commercial products.

But everything that was aimed at users and was free is being shut down a month from now on July 11th. This includes Meebo Messenger, the multiple-account IM client, Sharing on Meebo, the latest Meebo product, and Meebo Me, the embeddable widgets.

You can get your chatlogs via meebo.com/chatlog-download and your shared items by going to meebo.com, but you only have a month to do it. If you're using the embeddable widget, the service will just stop working and you have to manually remove the code from your site.

The Meebo Bar has been spared, for now, the company says it will be supported for the "months ahead." Beyond that, it's perhaps too early to make predictions.
