EA Still Keen on Rebooting Older Franchises Despite Syndicate Failure

Electronic Arts wants to continue rebooting its older franchises despite the fact that some recent risks, like with the Syndicate shooter, haven’t exactly paid off.

EA owns all sorts of franchises and, while some are quite active and popular, others are only remembered by veteran gamers.

Such was the case with Syndicate, a series of real time strategy experiences from the 1990s. The franchise has recently been rekindled by EA in collaboration with Starbreeze, who developed a shooter based on the classic titles.

Even if it didn’t reach the success that EA had hoped for, the company’s Labels boss, Frank Gibeau, told CVG that other franchises would soon be revived.

"Syndicate was something that we took a risk on. It didn't pay off - it didn't work," he said.

"But in general it doesn't change my appetite for wanting to go look in the library and see what we have and maybe bring back some IPs for the next-generation. That's the nature of the business; some stuff works, some stuff doesn't."

Another recent revival, SSX, has been quite successful and Gibeau hints that a sequel will appear in the future.

"I think SSX was a very successful launch for us and there was some online innovation there that really showed why it made sense to bring that back. It's done well and you'll probably see more in the future," he added.

Gibeau also highlighted some of the upcoming reboots that were set to appear the following year, ranging from Command & Conquer: Generals 2 to SimCity, and said that others would follow soon enough.

"There are numerous IPs that I think about all the time like Command & Conquer and Sim City - which is a brand we've brought back after seven years," he added.
