E3 2012 Hands-On: World of Warplanes

Wargaming.net has grown impressively in just one year, something that was plain in the size of their presence at E3 2012, where the company showed off the improvements that it was planning for the next version of World of Tanks while also demoing the way its follow-up World of Warplanes was set to work.

World of Tanks has managed to continue growing since launch and now the team behind it has plans to deliver content for it every four to six weeks over the coming year, with the aim of keeping more than 20 percent of those playing engaged with the MMO.

I also managed to keep some time with World of Warplanes, which gets the same concept and takes it to the sky, with gamers offered a wide range of planes (ground attack, nimble fighters and heavy two engine machines) designed to take out both enemy ground forces and other aircraft.

The controls take a little time to adjust to, but World of Warplanes then feels instantly familiar, with positioning one of the care attributes required for success and each player able to choose one type of warplane that suits his playing style.

The team says that all the aircraft it is modeling is created after extensive consulting with experts and linked closely to the original design, even if the actual handling is modified in order to make World of Warplanes easy to pick and play.

Wargaming says that gamers can use just the keyboard to play the game, but they can also include a mouse or switch to controller or even a joystiq.

The beta stage of World of Warplanes also introduces a unified account for all Wargaming.net made titles, allowing gamers to move currency between the two games and have a unified set of tools to manage their experiences.

World of Warplanes does not currently have a clear launch date and the development team is still tweaking mechanics based on feedback from the beta.

World of Battleships, another Wargaming.net project that could unify the battle space, will probably be launched in 2013.
