Developers Are Using Half of the Wii Us Potential, Nintendo Says

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has talked about the games that will appear for the upcoming Wii U home console, saying that developers are only capable of utilizing half of the device’s power because they lack experience working with its hardware.

The Nintendo Wii U was shown off extensively during the company’s E3 2012 press conference last week and, while we saw quite a few games be announced for the device, some fans weren’t that impressed with them.

Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata, however, believes that Wii U games will start becoming more and more attractive, as opposed to versions that will appear for the PS3 or Xbox 360, because developers will start getting accustomed to the new console.

"While existing platforms have engines that development teams have tuned and optimized for six to seven years after their respective launches, the Wii U is a new platform that has slightly different architecture and, since development teams have only just begun development on software for it, they are only at the halfway point to utilizing its full potential," he told investors, via CVG.

Some developers are coming to grips with the device, however, with Iwata highlighting Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed 3 as a great example.

"If you look at the game Assassin's Creed 3, which was recently announced or shown, you can't see much difference when you compare it with games for other companies' systems," he added.

Iwata also underlined that Nintendo could have made the Wii U much more powerful but, instead, relied on spending money to design the GamePad and keep the price of the console as low as possible.

"Because we have designed a new hardware system, we are using new technology and we are using new GPUs. But as we have to devote significant costs to the Wii U GamePad, if we were to apply the same level of enhancement that other console manufacturers shoot for to the processing power component, the Wii U would become extremely high in price, and it would not be affordable," Iwata pointed out.

"Ultimately, we're looking to maintain a price point for the Wii U that is reasonable in comparison to the value to be offered," he concluded.

Quite a few games are expected to appear alongside the Wii U when it is eventually released, but it seems that developers still need time to take advantage of the device.
