Windows Phone 8 Confirmed to Feature Bluetooth OBEX Profile

We anxiously wait for Microsoft to unveil the Windows Phone 8 operating system this fall and, as we near the official launch of the platform, new details on its features surface.

In this regard, Bluetooth SIG has just published the list of profiles supported by Windows Phone 8. According to this document, the next version of Windows Phone will come with a new OBEX profile which is responsible for sending and receiving files over Bluetooth.

This profile is missing in Windows Phone 7.5 and we’re not sure if it will be included in the Windows Phone 7.8 upgrade, which is expected to be announced along with Windows Phone 8 in the following months.

However, we still don’t have exact details on which type of files Windows Phone 8 smartphone owners will be able to transfer, but we hope there won’t be too many restrictions (or not at all).

In the same piece of news, the same document confirms the Audio/Video Remote Control profile has been upgraded to version 1.4, which means new features and capabilities.

With the latest version of this Audio/Video Remote Control profile, users will be able to browse and search multimedia content on media servers over Bluetooth connectivity.

Another profile that received an update is the Audio/Video Control Transport Protocol. Windows Phone 8 will come with version 1.3 of this profile, though we’re not sure whether or not the update adds important new features and capabilities.

We also have confirmation that Windows Phone 8 will support Bluetooth 3.0, instead of the newer Bluetooth 4.0 profile. The headset profile has been removed and the serial protocol has yet to be added, though devs will be provided with access to this feature.
