Usain Bolt's Historic Win Sets Olympic Twitter Record

The Olympics have been a great boon for Twitter, the global event was bound to get people excited and chatty all around the world. Undoubtedly, there has been plenty of activity on the site related to the big event. But none of it came close to the explosion of tweets when Usain Bolt took the gold in the 200m race.

That's after he had won the gold in the 100m event a few days back. He can now easily claim the title of greatest sprinter of all time, having won the same medals at the Beijing Olympics four years ago.

There have been only two other sprinters to defend their 100m titles from one Olympic event to the other, one of them being the legendary Carl Lewis. Bolt is the only sprinter in history to defend both medals.

It's no surprise then that Twitter was alit with tweets about the victory. The site registered 80,000 tweets per minute, the highest number during the London Olympics. That's impressive, but the current world record is 25,000 tweets per second.
