Student Pleads Guilty to Creating Fake SmartSource Coupons

Lucas Townsend Henderson, a 23-year-old student from Lubbock, Texas, has admitted to creating, using and spreading fake online coupons. His crimes caused the affected retailers to lose around $900,000 (729,000 EUR).

According to the FBI, Henderson began creating counterfeit coupons back in July 2010. He made them look like the ones from SmartSource.com and disseminated them on the Internet on various websites.

All his products bore the “Powered by SmartSource” logo, being created for items such as energy drinks, cigarettes, and even PlayStation and Xbox game consoles.

Court documents reveal that between July 2010 and March 2011, the suspect not only made the coupons and posted them anonymously on discussion forums, but he also wrote tutorials to teach others how to use a computer to create them.

On November 30, 2012, a judge will decide the sentence for Henderson. He faces up to 30 years in prison.
