Operation Green Rights: Anonymous Hacks AVX Corporation

AVX Corporation is a company that produces a wide variety of electrical components. So why would Anonymous hack their website and leak their database containing thousands of usernames, passwords, email addresses and other details?

Apparently, because the company was “directly involved” in the 1998 war in Congo, being accused by the United Nations of being interested in the extraction of Columbite-tantalite (coltan), the black metallic ore which triggered worldwide conflict and, more recently, an Anonymous campaign.

“Usually Coltan was stolen by war groups from Congo mines and carried out to the firms. Millions of people lost their lives in Congo war, nature was destroyed in order to dig coltan and a lots of gorillas were killed. Unfortunately UN decided to abandon the case and never punish the responsible of the war and nature devastation,” the hackers stated.

“AVX and other involved firms published an ethical code in 2010; they claim that they don't get tantalium from war areas.

“NOW a new civil war is growing up in Congo and is totally hypocrite to share DRC in different areas in order to say that some of these are war free. AVX, UN trial refused to punish you, but Operation Green Rights doesn't forget. AVX, is the time to pay for your crimes, the trial is the whole mankind,” they concluded.

The hacktivists accuse other companies as well of being involved in dirty games to gain access to the precious resource. These organizations – Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens, Sony, Intel, IMB, HP, Samsung, Nec, Motorola, Apple, Dell, and many others – can at any time become the victims of OpColtan and OpGreenRights.

We have attempted to contact AVX representatives, hoping to learn the extent of the damage caused by this security breach, but so far we haven’t heard back from them. We’ll update this article if they respond.
