The Universal Serial Bus 3.0 SuperSpeed standard is not the only interface supported by the latest addition to the OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro external storage drive and enclosure line.
The two other ports that the storage unit is equipped with are FireWire 800/400 connectors, perfect for use with Apple Mac systems.
“All that speed is housed in a pocket-sized drive offering up to 1.0TB of storage capacity - enough space to hold up to one million JPEG photos, 500 DVD movies, 76 hours of digital video, or 350,000 MP3 songs,” the announcement says.
That said, the new product from Other World Computing bears the name Mercury On-The-Go Pro and is a pocket-sized (2.5-inch), shock-resistant polycarbonate acrylic case design (transparent) holding either an HDD or SSD.
"USB 3.0 is fast becoming the high-performance interface standard for the majority of everyday Mac and PC computer uses," said Larry O'Connor, CEO, Other World Computing.
"Adding 'SuperSpeed' capability to our flagship portable Mercury On-The-Go Pro will keep it on top as one of the best-selling portable drives on the market."
When buying the Mercury On-the-Go portable drive, customers will have a choice between a 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM hard drive and an OWC Mercury Electra 6G Solid State Drive. The HDD options go as high as 1 TB, while the significantly more expensive solid-state drives have 480 GB as the top limit.
It is, of course, perfectly allowed to purchase the enclosure on its own. That way, if prospective buyers already own a small enough SATA unit, they can settle for that.
