Firefall Developer Blames Sony and Microsoft for Lack of Console Innovation

The developers behind the coming Firefall MMO have blamed the conservative Microsoft and Sony for the lack of innovation in the home console area and for the high prices that gamers need to pay for new retail packages.

Mark Kern, who is the chief executive officer at Red 5 Studios, has told Eurogamer that, “The reason we have no innovation left on consoles is because you have to spend so much money to make your game appeal to widest possible audience on that platform which is a closed platform, so that’s a limited number of users, right? Versus a PC with a free or open distribution model you can build a community around your game.”

The executive believes that both Sony and Microsoft are spending too much money on marketing and that pushes up the cost of new games.

Kern further said that, “It’s killing innovation because no one can take those risks anymore or try something new with those kinds of number. I think that’s bad for gamers and I think that’s cripplingly bad for developers.”

He added that currently there’s no clear scenario that would push Microsoft or Sony towards more innovation.

Red 5 Studios has been one of the first developers to back the new Ouya open console, which might be delivered during the fall.

Ouya is delivered by a number of high profile developers and aims to create a gaming space which is entirely open and allows any user to hack and adapt the hardware and the software to his own needs.

The device was met with a lot of skepticism after it asked for support via a Kickstarter campaign.

Both Microsoft and Sony are expected to soon offer information about their next generation of home consoles.

Firefall does not yet have an official launch date, but Red 5 Studios is collecting data from players who are engaged in a beta phase.
