Despite 3DS and Wii U Launches Nintendo Is Not Exploiting Mario

Despite the fact that Nintendo has launched two Mario-powered games in quick succession, the company is not afraid of diminishing the value of the character and has made sure that every experience offered starring the character is different.

Satoru Iwata, who is the leading executive at Nintendo, has told Kotaku that, “We only create a New Super Mario Bros. title one per platform. I think we’ll probably go ahead and continue at that pace. That being said, that’s probably Miyamoto’s choice, so I can’t give you a 100% guarantee that that’s the pace we’ll continue at.”

He added, “They do share a name and there are some components that are similar. That being said, these are two very unique and separate titles. We have a Mario you can play in the palm of your hand and a Mario you can play seated in front of your TV. I believe the two titles are unique enough that I wouldn’t say that I’m super-worried that people are going to be confused.”

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was launched during the weekend for the Nintendo 3DS handheld, and it is clearly designed to push up sales of the hardware during the upcoming pre-Christmas shopping period.

During 2012, New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii U home console also needs to be launched to support the new home console from Nintendo.

Mario is one of the biggest characters for Nintendo and games based around him are often linked to hardware platform launches.

The Nintendo 3DS has done well during 2012, after the company cut its price during August last year, and the Wii U is set to arrive on all major markets before the end of the year.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and other core Nintendo characters, has suggested that he might retire from his development role in order to work with young game creators.
