Big Name Brands Ditch Cruelty-Free Policies to Sell Cosmetics to China

In their quest for profit, big name brands like Chanel, Johnson & Johnson and Revlon are expanding on the huge Chinese market. In doing so, they're also ditching the animal cruelty-free policies because animal testing is still mandatory here.

The cosmetics industry is on the rise in China and huge names are looking to profit from that.

Chanel, Johnson & Johnson, Revlon, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Avon, Estee Lauder and L'Oreal will no longer display the internationally recognized Leaping Bunny logo on their products, the Daily Mail informs.

It is used to indicate that the product with it has not been tested on animals. However, in China, animal testing on cosmetics is still required by law, so all these brands will have to comply if they want a share of the pie.

Useless to say, it's the animals that stand to suffer, as Michelle Thew, chief executive of Cruelty Free International, which awards the Leaping Bunny logos, says in a statement to the British publication.

“Each company is regularly audited to ensure that no animal testing takes place throughout each company’s entire supply chain. Where companies no longer comply with the Humane Standards, the right to use the Leaping Bunny logo is retracted,” Thew says of the system through which the Bunny is awarded.

“Some companies wish to bring ethical beauty to China, however this is not currently possible until China changes its current policy which requires animal testing,” Thew goes on to say.

“I am disappointed that certain companies have fallen prey to the lure of the Chinese market and are letting animals pay the price. Consumer pressure can make a difference,” she says.

Even in this context of major brands ditching the animal cruelty-free policy for a chance to conquer the Chinese market, costumers should know that they still have other options, which will provide them with quality products that have not been tested on animals.

“We certify over 400 companies around the world that refuse to allow animal testing into their products, so there is plenty of choice for everyone who wishes to eliminate this cruel, unnecessary and outdated practice,” Thew goes on to say.
