Apple Investigating Mountain Lion Battery Drain, OS X 10.8.1 on the Horizon

The Mountain Lion battery drain issue has escalated. Complaint after complaint keeps hitting an Apple forum thread that has racked up roughly 35,000 views (at the time of this writing) in under two weeks.

At the time we reported this issue it had already seemed to be a widespread problem among owners of MacBook laptops. With another ten thousand views added since, the thread speaks for itself - Apple needs to fix this.

One of the most recent complaints, coming from a customer writing under the screen name “ruffellprefley,” can be found below.

“‘downgraded’ to lion until this issue with ML gets sorted out. seeing an estimated 7:30 on a full charge with safari and ichat open, and also downloading software updates (2GB worth).”

The user adds, “for me it's without a doubt a ML issue and not a hardware issue. bummer; wasted $20.”

Actually, if history is any indication, the money paid for the upgrade is not wasted. As some Apple fans will recall, OS X version 10.7 (Lion) suffered from similar issues at launch time. Apple simply released an update and poof, the problem was solved!

In fact, every newly-release piece of software needs to go through a real-life test run with millions of customers before all the bugs are ironed out.

And by this we mean all the serious bugs, not those tiny ones that poke their head out every once in a while.

A report by Tech Radar aggregating impressions from tech blogs around the world informs that Apple has begun investigating the battery drain problem by talking to affected customers.

MacBook owners experiencing short battery life after upgrading to OS X 10.8 are receiving logging software, as well as questionnaires asking them to provide information about their configuration.

This, again, is standard procedure in Cupertino. No piece of software can ever be perfect, and Apple is likely working around the clock to address this problem as soon as possible. Expect OS X 10.8.1 or a dedicated “Battery Update” for MacBook computers to arrive in the near future.
