Amazon Introduces Glacier for Long-Term Cloud Storage and Backup

Amazon is continuing to expand its cloud services offering. It's still the biggest public cloud provider and it's now amassed a solid list of products. The latest addition is Amazon Glacier, a long-term backup and storage solution.

Glacier is designed for data that does not need to be accessed that often but that still needs to be stored for long periods.

"Examples include digital media archives, financial and healthcare records, raw genomic sequence data, long-term database backups, and data that must be retained for regulatory compliance," Amazon explained.

Pricing can go as low as $0.01/GB per month which is quite cheap, compared to similar offerings or an on-site solution. Add to this costs for data transfers and some other fees.

Glacier works with Amazon's other cloud services, obviously, and the company boasts that it guarantees 99.999999999% "durability."
