Microsoft Unveils Windows 8 In-App Ad Concept

Microsoft is currently working with developers across the globe on a special program that will allow the company to display ads in some of the applications included in Windows Store.

The Windows 8 in-app ad concept was detailed in a blog post by Stephen Kim, General Manager of Yarn (formerly Global Creative Solutions) for Microsoft Advertising, who said that this new idea “showcases how digital advertising can be more interactive and revolve around customer-initiated experiences that can be beautiful, relevant and useful.”

Basically, Microsoft wants some of the Windows Store apps to display advertisements to its users, in a similar way as some of the Apple App Store apps available on the iOS platform. The in-app ads are thus displayed at the bottom or at the top of the screen, without disrupting users’ experience.

The same system will be applied to Windows Store apps too, so don’t be too surprised if for example you get to see a Delta Airlines ad in the NBC News app or a Ford Fusion banner in a Chicago Tribune app.

“Bringing partners on board from the beginning is vital to the long-term success of the Windows 8 ecosystem. Working together in the co-ideation process demonstrates what can be gained from great collaboration when you involve creativity and technology. It’s exciting to see how we’re driving innovation in this opportunity to create new industry standards,” Kim said in a blog post.

Microsoft is already working as with speak on new advertisement deals with developers, so the company’s efforts to bring more developers to the new Windows 8 platform may finally pay off.

“It will be interesting to see the reactions to these advertisements by Windows 8 users after the OS launches on October 26,” Kim concluded.
