Although it’s not among the most popular tablets out there, BlackBerry PlayBook is the only tablet launched by Research In Motion (RIM).
Of course, multiple versions of the slate are currently available on the market, so BlackBerry fans get to choose exactly what suits them best.
Even though these BlackBerry PlayBook models feature different hardware configurations, they are powered by the same PlayBook OS 2.0 since early this year.
However, the folks over at MobileSyrup were able to get their hands on a RIM internal document, which confirms the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 upgrade will be pushed live starting October 3.
Here are some of the most important improvements added by this major software update mentioned in the leaked document:
- Allows PIM (Messages, Calendar, Contacts) to be viewed in portrait orientation;
- PIM – Deep Folder Hierarchy. Previously, if a customer had multiple nested folders within email;
- Allows for Wi-Fi to be used for Bridge between 2 devices if they’re on the same Wi-Fi network;
- BlackBerry Bridge will now support viewing SMS messages on the PlayBook.

Other new features and enhancements included in the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 are listed below:
- Print to Go will now work across different networks;
- Android apps will now be run in separate windows instead of one window for every Android app;
- Android apps will now have the ability to use the PlayBook camera;
- A customer will now be able to make in-app payments within Android apps.
