Verizon's Galaxy Nexus Receives Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean

Today, mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has started the delivery of the latest flavor of Google's Android operating system to the owners of a Galaxy Nexus smartphone on its network.

The new Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean upgrade brings along a host of new features when compared to what the Ice Cream Sandwich platform release that was running on Galaxy Nexus had to offer.

“Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software upgrade, SW Version JRO03O, for your Galaxy Nexus by Samsung. This update includes an upgrade to the Android Operating System (Jelly Bean),” the wireless carrier notes on its support website.

The update brings along Google Now, which is meant to deliver relevant pieces of information at users' fingertips as fast as possible, as well as a smart keyboard, voice search, Notifications enhancements and more.

At the same time, the new platform comes with a series of visual changes when compared to Ice Cream Sandwich, along with various performance enhancements.

Some of the new features that Google has packed inside Jelly Bean include:

- Move between home screens with more intuitive graphics and silky-smooth transitions.
- More reactive and uniform touch responses.
- Personalize your home screen easily by placing widgets directly on the screen.
- Widgets now resize automatically when they are too big.
- Swipe over from camera to filmstrip view photos you just took, and quickly swipe away the ones you don’t like.
- When Talkback is enabled, the “Explore by Touch tutorial” will be enabled.
- When Talkback is “On”, new screen gesture “shortcuts” will be enabled.

The new platform release also includes Android Beam, which is meant to enable users to easily share photos, videos and other content with NFC capable devices that are powered by Android 4.1 as well.

Sharing of contacts, web pages, YouTube videos, directions, and apps is also possible, all with a single tap on the phone's screen.

Verizon also packed a set of other improvements in the new software update, such as the option to choose whether pressing the power key will lock the handset or not, or support for Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS).

Following the update, MMS messages sent to an Outlook E-mail address now have a file extension allowing the image to be opened, and the handset will provide support for IPv6 web sites. Folders in email are now showed in a proper structure, Verizon notes.

Those who would like to grab the update should head to Settings > About Phone > Software Updates and tap Check now. For specific info on how to perform the update, users should head over to Verizon's support website.
