The new Project Eternity game that developer Obsidian is funding via Kickstarter is a chance for the team to create their own franchise and game world, something that the traditional publishing model of the gaming industry has failed to do.
Speaking to Kotaku, Chris Avellone, who is the leader of the team, has stated, “Project: Eternity is our opportunity to finally develop our own fantasy RPG world and franchise. Finally. Did I say finally enough? One more time: finally.”
Kickstarter allows players to directly support a project they are interested in.
Avellone added, “I’d much rather have the players be my boss and hear their thoughts for what would be fun than people who might be more distant from the process and the genre and frankly, any long-term attachment to the title.”
Other companies that have sought Kickstarter support, including Double Fine, cited similar reasons and a desire to be closer to their fan base during the development process.
The official description for Project Eternity says that the game will be a party-based traditional role- playing game that will use a isometric perspective.
The announcement mentions classics like Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment as its main inspirations.
Some of the developers working at Obsidian are coming from Black Isle, the company that created some of the most interesting RPGs of the ‘90’s.
Project Eternity has been funded in less than 2 days and Obsidian has since added a number of stretch goals which the community seems to be on its way to also reaching.
Project Eternity will be launched during 2014 on the PC and the team might also add support for Mac and Linux.
