No Price Cut for PS3 Super Slim Is a Mistake, Analysts Say

Sony is making a huge mistake by introducing the PlayStation 3 Super Slim with the same or even higher price than the current PS3 model, at least according to a few analysts that shared their thoughts on the new product.

The PlayStation 3 has kept its $250/€250 price tag for quite some time so quite a lot of people hoped that, with the introduction of the new redesigned PlayStation 3 model, Sony would lower the price on its home console.

Sadly, this isn’t the case, as Sony itself declared that customers wanted more value, not lower prices.

This isn’t a good strategy, at least according to analyst Colin Sebastian of R.W. Baird, who talked with GamesIndustry about the new model.

"I think the form factor looks like a nice improvement, but if I were Sony I would focus more on lowering prices," he said. "At this point, in terms of competing at the end of the cycle and in terms of driving more mind share, I don't think consumers are as interested in the prettiest console they can find, but rather the one that has the best value."

Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities agrees with this point of view, and speculates that Microsoft will certainly gain the upper hand over Sony when it introduces new bundles.

"I think Sony is missing an opportunity to differentiate on price," he revealed. "And I think they're going to be caught flat footed when Microsoft does something like bundling Kinect with the Xbox for $200."

Sadly, while it seems that Sony is making a mistake, P.J. McNealy of DWS Research believes that Sony’s hand is forced by the current financial state of the company as a whole.

"[The PlayStation division has] a corporate mandate, with Kaz Hirai in charge, of trying to make money - and cutting the price isn't always in line with that mandate," he says. "The reality is Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo have two choices now. They can cut prices on current models or they can extend the life cycles of the current machines by adding more technology and bundling games with them. Sony is clearly in the second camp."

The PlayStation 3 Super Slim will go on sale tomorrow, September 25, in North America, and on September 28, in Europe.
