Humor and Weapon Combinations Form Core of Insomniacs Fuse

The focus of the new Fuse is no longer on stealth movements and cooperative mechanics, according to the leader of the Insomniac studio that’s creating the new game.

Ted Price, who is the leader of the development team working on Fuse, stated, “At the time, when we showed Overstrike in 2011 we weren’t where we needed to be with the weapons. We had some cool concepts on paper and in the video, but ultimately, when we started playing the game, the weapons lacked heft, they lacked impact, and they lacked that fun factor that we believe is at the core of every one of our games.”

Fuse is based on another Insomniac project called Overstrike, which was set to feature four characters and a variety of weapons.

As the team worked on Overstrike they saw that the cooperative mechanics and the weapon use were not suited to each other, which pushed them to change the core elements of the game and its name.

Insomniac introduced more humor to the characters and made weapons have a bigger impact on enemies.

Ted Price added, “Where you feel like you’ve done a lot of damage, and you’ve ruined that enemy’s day, and we weren’t doing that with the weapons we had before. Even though in the video they looked cool, they weren’t turning people on here and they weren’t turning people on that we had come in and play the game.”

The name Fuse also underlines the main mechanic of the game, which allows players to combine the power of their weapons during firefights.

Stealth will continue to be one element of the experience but not the dominant one.

Fuse will be published by Electronic Arts on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 during March 2013.

Price has also suggested that the game might get sequels that arrive on next-generation home gaming consoles.
