Doom 3: BFG Edition Is More than a HD Re-Release

One of the leading developers working on the upcoming Doom 3: BFG Edition has explained why gamers should get the new version of the first-person shooter that was launched during 2004 and how the new package is different from a simple High Definition update.

Tim Willits, the creative director at id Software, told VG247 that, “We’re doing more with Doom 3 BFG than just re-releasing the original. We’ve actually put a heck of a lot of Rage tech into the Doom 3 engine to kind of modernise the game.”

The developer mentioned that the team made changes to elements as different as ammo, checkpoints, input, flashlight, network layer, multi display and 3D support.

Willits added, “we went through every single level of the original and things that were really frustrating or not fun, we made them more enjoyable so it is really kind of cool for us – especially as we all love the Doom franchise – to go back and rework the game in such a way.”

The executive sees Doom 3: BFG Edition as a way to bring back long-term fans of the franchise and give them something new to play, but also as a recruitment team for new players.

Doom 3: BFG Edition will arrive on the Xbox Live Arcade, the PSN and the PC on October 16 in the United States and October 19 in Europe.

id Software has already confirmed that it is also working on Doom 4, which will be created using the all new id Tech 5 engine (already seen in action for RAGE) and will also be offered on the PC and on current home consoles.

The company has not offered any details on the game, but its core team is now working on it full time and one of the main aims is to recapture the original feeling of the series.
