Chrome 23 Is Finally Available for Chromebooks

Chrome OS users have finally been updated to Chrome 23 in the dev channel. There's been a slight delay between the time when Chrome 23 was made available for desktop users and now when it's available on Chromebooks.

That said, Chrome 23.0.1262.2, part of Chrome OS 2876.0.0, comes with plenty of improvements.

For one, there's a brand new Flash 11.3.31.329, the Pepper version that comes bundled with Chrome OS and more recently with the regular Chrome. Flash 11.4 is the latest desktop release.

Several parts of Chrome OS have seen improvements in the latest update. The application launcher has seen some tweaks, the photo importer has been enhanced as well.

Both the desktop and the notifications system have gotten some improvements as well. That said, there are plenty of known issues with this latest release.

If you have an external display hooked up, it's going to get cropped when resuming from sleep. Similarly, you may get a black screen at boot if you use an external display. The only way to fix this is to restart the machine.

Instant search is broken in this release and the "open" button is missing from the file manager, you can use right click to open files. Closing maximized windows via the keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+W, results in a crash and maximizing an app window leads to a black screen.

These types of issues are to be expected with a preview release like the dev channel builds. These are intended for advanced users and those that can't wait to check out the latest features. The downside is that they have to put up with the occasional issue.

The latest dev channel update should be landing on devices over the next few days, it may have arrived already as the entire process is automatic.
