As Less TVs Sell, the Odds Increase for Larger and Smarter Models

Pretty much the whole IT industry is still feeling the repercussions of a weakened worldwide economy, and the TV market is one where no improvement seems to be in sight.

The reason for this is simple: citizens don't really have much of a reason to upgrade their TVs.

Smart TVs, with web support and widgets, were an attempt to make TVs appealing enough to warrant “upgrades.”

Unfortunately, TV shipments are still weak, and since there is no real alternative, TV makers are thinking of going yet another step further with TV development, until they launch even larger and better/more feature-rich products.

Analyst firm DisplaySearch points out that overall TV shipments fell 2% on year in the second quarter, but sales of 40-inch and larger TVs actually rose 15%.

Sony's BRAVIA 84-Inch 4K LED TV and LG's UD 3D TV of similar size are just extra evidence.

What remains is to see if these two companies, along with Sharp and Panasonic, rebound after quarterly declines. Samsung is the only one whose TV revenue grew in Q2 (18%).
