Weekend Reading: Getting Angry with Dark Souls and Orcs Must Die 2

Video games are a form of interactive entertainment so you’d expect to feel happy when playing them. However, certain experiences elicit other feelings, from disappointment, when playing bad ones, to other emotions, when playing ones that deliver touching moments.

Others, like the recent Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition or Orcs Must Die 2, elicit anger, as they task players with completing tougher and tougher goals while punishing them with death and poor scores, respectively, if they don’t reach them.

I played both of them this week, as I reviewed Dark Souls and jumped back into Orcs Must Die 2 because of the new Fire & Water downloadable add-on, and they’ve really gotten on my nerves.

Dark Souls’ challenging nature is already infamous in the gaming world and I was prepared to die, like its subtitle suggests. Unfortunately, I underestimated the game’s grueling nature and tried like 10 times to defeat the first boss, and only then with the guidance of a colleague.

I already mastered Orcs Must Die 2, after quite a few anger sessions as well, but the Fire & Water DLC brings two very annoying enemies, in the form of Fire and Water lords. While it’s relatively easy to defeat the fire ones, the water-based opponents are much trickier. They start out small and, once you kill them, they leave a puddle on the floor for a certain time. If another little guy reaches that puddle, they get larger and larger until you’re facing a hulking water behemoth that’s quite hard to take down.

Even if these two games have really gotten me angry, I’ll keep playing them in order to master their challenges.

This isn’t an easy thing for a game to do, as it needs to feel fair, not cheap, in order to keep players from abandoning it.
