Understanding of Pandora Powers Borderlands Success

One of the leading developers working on Borderlands 2 has revealed that the success of the series is linked to the deep understanding that the team has of the game universe and what players expect from it.

Carl Shedd, who is a level designer working at Gearbox, has told Gamasutra that, “You have to play it. That's something with Borderlands 2 that we're always doing, we're always, constantly playing it. Really, you have to do that -- experience it and understand where it's at, so you can get an understanding of where you stand.”

He added, “We understand what this space was created for. We understand what story beats we're trying to hit with it, and then it's just that kind of tug of war -- a friendly tug of war -- in accommodating combat, gameplay, and then the visuals.”

Gearbox is well known for the big change in art style that was introduced to the first Borderlands very close to the launch date.

The team felt that the game did not stand out enough from the other shooters that it competed with, so the team worked fast in order to implement the look that contributed to making the game one of the biggest hits of 2009.

Randy Pitchford, the leader of Gearbox, has stated that he is always willing to go back to the drawing board as long the game experience does not satisfy.

For Borderlands 2, the team has iterated on the concepts of the first game, introducing more variety to the weapons and to the enemies.

The story of the new game features four new characters, with another one set to come via downloadable content, who are working together to stop Handsome Jack and his Hyperion Corporation.

Borderlands 2 is already out on the United States market on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC and European players will get access to it tomorrow.
