The Lunar Surface Like You've Never Seen It Before [Video]

Using photographs relayed back to Earth by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), NASA experts were recently able to create this breathtaking video of the lunar surface, which contains zero artist renditions and animations.

Everything you see in this clip is pure LRO data. The spacecraft launched towards the Moon in 2009, alongside the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS), on an Atlas V rocket.

Since then, it has been moving around the Moon in a low, 50-kilometer polar mapping orbit, which is why the views is takes of the lunar surface are so detailed. At the same time, its cameras are working towards creating a 3D view of the entire lunar surface.

The video “highlights vast portions of the lunar surface that have yet to be explored; and demonstrates how new images are revealing dramatic details of future landing sites suitable for both robotic and human missions,” David A. Kring writes in the video' description on YouTube.
