Supreme Court of Japan Website Restored After Chinese Cyberattack

As we reported last week, the website of Japan’s Supreme Court has been taken offline after hackers defaced it to display a Chinese flag and their protest message. On Friday, authorities restored the site and confirmed that the cyberattack did in fact originate from China, Daily Yomiuri informs.

The website has been offline for over a week after hackers breached it on September 14 as a form of protest against Japan’s intent to nationalize three of the controversial Senkaku (Diaoyu) Islands.

According to Supreme Court representatives, it's believed that the attackers haven’t managed to steal any data. However, they claim that additional investigation is needed since they attempted to penetrate the institution’s systems once again while the site was offline.

The site of the Supreme Court wasn’t the only one affected. Numerous targets were appointed and at least 10 other websites suffered from distributed denial-of-service attacks and breaches.
