Standalone Day Z Will Appear on Home Consoles

Developer Bohemia Interactive has revealed that it was planning to launch a PC standalone version of the Day Z mod that was created for ArmA II and it seems that the game will also make the jump to current-generation home consoles despite the lack of an official announcement.

Jan Kunt, who is a producer working at Bohemia Interactive, has told VideoGamer that, “Obviously DayZ, you’ve seen the success of Minecraft on Xbox Live Arcade, and we’d probably be stupid not to try to do something similar. We’ve always wanted to make games for consoles as well. Obviously we’re a PC developer and have been for some years, but consoles have a huge market and you don’t have so many problems with piracy.”

He added, “PC is what it is, and I personally think PC players will stay as PC players, but the console has more penetration into mainstream markets. People who wouldn’t play games on PC, they buy an Xbox or PS3 as a medium to play games.”

Kunt mentioned Minecraft, the XBLA-based title that is also available on the PC and has managed to sell more than 1 million units on the Xbox 360, as one potential model for Day Z.

Day Z is an open-world zombie-based game that puts players on a beach with limited resources and then challenges them to survive for as long as possible, dodging both the undead and the various human players who choose to prey on the less fortunate.

The PC-based version of Day Z will be launched before the end of 2012.

At the moment, Bohemia Interactive is also working on ArmA III, the next generation of military simulation, which is supposed to introduce more realism and a bigger open-world area to the series.

The game will be launched on the PC during 2013.
