Rumor Mill: Zelda for Wii U Arrives in 2014

A source inside the Japanese division of Nintendo has told the fan site Wii U daily that the company is preparing a Zelda title for its new home console that could be launched as early as 2014 and will revolutionize the way players look at the series.

The source stated, “Nintendo is sticking to the core values of Zelda, while trying to appeal to a wide range of gamers, casual and hardcore. They feel they’ve found the sweet spot with Skyward Sword, and they’re continuing this approach with the Wii U Zelda game.”

It seems that one of the main features of the Wii U-based Zelda title will be an entirely new game engine that is being created specifically to take advantage of the features of the new home consoles, with a set of advanced graphics options and third-party tech use ranging from Havok for physics to rendering from Umbra.

It seems that the demo of Zelda that Nintendo has shown at E3 2011 is not linked to the upcoming Wii U project in any significant way and used an older engine.

The source added, “They got hundreds of people working on the new Wii U Zelda game. It’s a 4-year development cycle with a new console, new technology, new engine etc. It’ll end up being the most expensive game they’ve made to date.”

Apparently, the resources, both human and financial involved, are close to those that Rockstar deploys in order to create the new Grand Theft Auto titles.

The Wii U Zelda game will have the same number of dungeons as previous titles, but each of them will be bigger and will require players to do more exploration and more fighting.

The team is also including mini-games and side quests, although they are not yet clearly defined.

Wii U Zelda will also include support for the Miiverse and a new way of delivering hints from one player to another.
