Project Eternity Could Have Been Kickstarted by a Publisher

Feargus Urquhart, the leader of developer Obsidian, reveals that, before it has launched the Kickstarter project for Project Eternity, the company was approached by publishers who were interested in supporting the project as long as they could own the game universe and the name.

“We were actually contacted by some publishers over the last few months that wanted to use us to do a Kickstarter,” the Chief Executive Officer argues.

“I said to them: ‘So, you want us to do a Kickstarter for, using our name, we then get the Kickstarter money to make the game, you then publish the game, but we then don’t get to keep the brand we make and we only get a portion of the profits.’ They said, ‘Yes’,” he then goes on to say.

The developer believes that the companies that contacted Obsidian had the best intentions but that they were simply unable to take the opportunities and the developer’s needs into account.

Obsidian has refused them and chose to use its own name and clout among old-school role-playing game lovers to get the money it needs in order to make Project Eternity real.

The new game will be party based and will be played from an isometric perspective.

Gamers will have the ability to create and customize their own character before recruiting a party of companions and exploring a new game world that includes unique factions, complex politics and interesting tactical challenges.

Obsidian has introduced new contribution tiers for their Kickstarter projects, allowing those who are only interested in a digital version of the game to get a special edition that also includes a soundtrack, wallpapers, a Collector’s Book and high resolution version of the game map and art.

Project Eternity will also be delivered DRM free via GOG and gamers will be able to also get a Steam key for their contribution.
