Munster: iPhone 5 Is a Rolex in a Sea of Timexes

A renowned financial analyst with investment bank Piper Jaffray has issued an investor note based on a hands-on experience with the new iPhone 5. Gene Munster advises us to hold off any criticism until we’ve held this thing in our hands.

Munster and his analytical buds believe there’s a “media bubble” around the new Apple iPhone that spawned some mixed feelings in people’s hearts.

However, Munster cautions, “the reality is that when actual consumers have the product in hand, we believe they will be impressed.”

A conviction shared by many Apple fanatics, every product Apple has rolled out for the past decade feels just as good as it looks. The experience isn’t complete until you’ve grasped it.

We’ve noted this ourselves in a short feature on Jony Ive’s impressive description of the technological processes employed by Apple to achieve the iPhone 5’s aluminum unibody shell. Have a look here.

Munster specifically states in his research note, “We view the iPhone 5 as the Rolex of smartphones in terms of quality and build, while the majority of other phones are dominated by lesser quality plastic and feel more like Timexes.”

“Why would someone by [sic] a Timex when they can have a Rolex for the same price?” asks Munster.

The analyst estimates that consumers are actually regarding the iPhone 5 better, compared to the iPhone 4S. Well, no surprise there. After all, the 4S did look exactly the same as its predecessor. And you can’t feel Siri, can you?

“We remain confident in our 6-10 million unit estimate for iPhone 5 for the remainder of September and 49 million iPhone estimate for December,” Munster addded.

A key bullet point from Munster’s original research note can be found below. Excerpted by Business Insider, it reveals how Munster and his fellow analysts reached the aforementioned conclusions.

We believe that pictures and video of the new iPhone 5 do not sufficiently convey the level of upgrade the product represents. We were able to see and hold the device following the launch and believe there are two aspects that will pleasantly surprise consumers. First, we believe the actual feel and build of the phone is beyond that of any prior iPhone iteration. Second, we believe the weight difference between the iPhone 5 and the 4S is meaningful and consumers will notice the difference in their pocket, despite the larger screen size.
