Millions of GoDaddy Sites Down for Hours, Possibly Due to DDoS Attack on DNS Servers

Sites hosted by GoDaddy suffered an outage for several hours during which time they were completely or partially unavailable. Not all sites hosted by GoDaddy were affected, but many were.

The outage has been resolved and all sites are back up, but GoDaddy has not explained what caused the outage.

"Most customer hosted sites back online. We're working out the last few kinks for our site & control centers. No customer data compromised," is the last thing the company tweeted, several hours ago. Go Daddy has been quiet since.

An alleged Anonymous member, AnonymousOwn3r, took responsibility for the outage and said he worked alone, but his claims have been unconfirmed. Other Anonymous members denied the involvement of the group, as well.

Security experts say that it may have been a DDoS attack directed at GoDaddy's DNS servers, but without confirmation from the company, it's impossible to know for sure.

At one point, GoDaddy appealed to its competitor VeriSign to handle its DNS, redirecting GoDaddy to VeriSign servers. The theory is that this was done for the DNS servers that weren't under attack to prevent them from going down as well.

Requests were later redirected back to GoDaddy, which is now operating as usual. The company says no user data was compromised in the attack and that it will issue a more detailed statement, probably an account of what happened today.

GoDaddy is the world's largest domain name register, but it also offers hosting services, mostly to small businesses that buy package deals. It's these sites hosted by GoDaddy that were affected.

VeriSign is also one of the biggest domain name registers in the world, but also provides services to protect customers from DDoS attacks. Whether GoDaddy used them during the outage is unclear.

GoDaddy has the infrastructure to handle most DDoS attacks directed at its hosting servers. However, this attack, if it happened, was targeted on its DNS servers that couldn't deal with the strain. We'll find out more soon enough.
