iPhone Factory Goes Back Online Following Brawl

A Foxconn factory making iPhones and, more recently, headlines, is now operational again, following an employee uprising reportedly caused by a conflict between workers and security guards.

Foxconn’s plant in the northern Chinese city of Taiyuan, which makes iPhone parts, has been the topic of widespread discussion in the media following a dispute between a worker and a security guard that quickly escalated leading to massive destruction around the campus.

40 people were reported injured, many of them hospitalized, reports say. According to Fox News, Chinese authorities have managed to calm spirits down, and the plant is now back online.

“A Chinese factory owned by the manufacturer of Apple's iPhones has resumed production after a brawl involving some 2,000 workers highlighted chronic labor tensions in a country that prohibits independent unions,” reports Fox.

It was recently confirmed that the factory makes iPhone parts. Apple has just launched its iPhone 5 to high acclaim, but is having trouble making enough units to satisfy demand.

A worker at the plant only identified by his surname - Li - reportedly said, “Foxconn, some supervisors, and security guards never respect us. We all have this anger toward them and they (the workers) wanted to destroy things to release this anger.”

Foxconn is under heavy fire from the media with every passing month, as of late.

Also cited in the report is Geoffrey Crothall, communications director for China Labour Bulletin, an organization based in Hong Kong that aims to defend the rights of Chinese workers.

"They have no other way of voicing their grievances," said Crothall. “There are no formal channels of communication or ways of resolving grievances through peaceful negotiation.”

"Workers are expected to obey their manager at all times, not to question but simply to what they are told," Crothall said. "That atmosphere is not conducive to a happy or contented workforce. It's a very dehumanizing way of treating workers."
