Insomniac Doesn't Know Why Resistance Could Not Compete with Halo

When it was first introduced, Resistance was supposed to be the PlayStation 3’s answer to the Halo series that Microsoft was making exclusive to the Xbox 360. After three games, the series failed to become one of Sony’s blockbusters and the developer is not sure why.

Ted Price, who is the chief executive officer of Insomniac, has told Kotaku that, “We have theories internally about why Resistance wasn’t a Halo. One is that we changed the game a lot in Resistance 2, and we surprised players in a way that perhaps wasn’t what was expected.”

It seems that gamers were expecting to see a game that was more similar to the first one in the series and reacted angrily when Insomniac created something different.

Price added, “On Resistance 3, we went back to some of our more traditional core mechanics that players did love, and then built a story that was more personal. That in our opinion was the way to move the franchise forward in a way that was unique for first-person shooters.”

The CEO says that the team is still very proud of the game that they created despite the fact that it was not successful on the market.

Price was also full of praise for the Nihilistic development team that made Resistance: Burning Skies, the PlayStation Vita-based spin-off that added some backstory to the series.

At the moment, Insomniac Games is no longer working on the Resistance series although Sony has suggested that the company might use another studio to create a new title in the franchise.

Insomniac is at the moment working on Ratchet & Clank: Q-Force, aka Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault.

The team seems to be interested in exploring new genres and release smaller games, a trend that’s visible in the new Fuse, a game based on a previous project called Overstrike.
