Google Maps Ported to iOS 6 with a Catch

Left with a faulty Maps application on his iPhone, iOS hacker and engineer Ryan Petrich decided to make life easier for himself (and everyone else wielding an iPhone) by porting the original Google Maps application from iOS 5 over to iOS 6.

Admittedly requiring a jailbreak from the user, the iOS 5.1 Maps application is a tad glitchy, “but it mostly works,” says Petrich.

The developer is keeping the port in-house until he irons out all the bugs. Petrich also confirmed that his port runs on devices as old as the 2009 iPhone 3GS.

The video embedded below shows a demo of the Google Maps application running on iOS 6. The performance is visibly sub-par.

Google has confirmed that it would continue to support the Maps service under iOS versions below 6.0, and there’s even talk of the Mountain View search giant developing a dedicated application to sell through the App Store (much like the standalone YouTube app).

Apple, for its part, released a statement last week acknowledging that its new Maps app in iOS 6 is far from flawless. The Cupertino giant advised customers to exercise a little patience as the cloud-based service fixes itself.

“Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service,” said spokeswoman Trudy Miller.

“We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it.”

“Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.”

A contractor who worked on Google Maps is telling TechCrunch that Apple is actively poaching Google employees to help bolster its own Maps service.
