Gmail Users Can Now Send and Save Attachments to SkyDrive

SkyDrive has seen a lot of enhancements lately, and some more new features are bound to provide users with a better experience when accessing Microsoft’s service.

Last month, Microsoft updated SkyDrive to provide developers with increased access to the service, and also removed all API restrictions related to photo resolution and content types, while also delivering a new, easy-to-use file picker API for websites.

Thus, a new enhancement for the service is available today and involves Gmail users, providing them with the possibility to easily save attachments on SkyDrive, while also being able to send files directly from the cloud storage.

These new capabilities are available courtesy of Attachments.me, which took advantage of the new SkyDrive APIs to connect SkyDrive with Gmail.

Not only can users take advantage of Attachments.me’s Chrome extension to easily send and access SkyDrive files straight from Gmail, but they can also create specific rules to have files automatically saved to SkyDrive.

This new feature is meant to prove that SkyDrive can be integrated not only in Windows 8 applications, but that the new SkyDrive APIs open the door for much more.

“It’s innovative scenarios like these that showcase the power of SkyDrive and keep pushing us and our partners to continue to find more ways to give you the world’s most versatile cloud storage service,” Microsoft notes in a blog post.

Developers interested in integrating SkyDrive in their applications can take advantage of a series of features such as the possibility to upload full resolution pictures straight from the software (until now, all pictures that were larger than 2048 × 2048 pixels were automatically resized by SkyDrive).

At the same time, developers can use the service to backup app data, and can take advantage of new improvements that enable any web app with personal cloud storage to make use of the new file picker, Microsoft explains.
