France Sets to Ban the Words Mother and Father

French officials have drafted a controversial law in which the words “Mother” and “Father” are to be banned from public records, and replaced with the term “parents.”

This initiative by the French government comes at a time in which the country is trying to legalize gay marriage ceremonies. The law states that marriage will be defined as “a union of two people, of different or the same gender.”

All references in the civil code to “mothers and fathers” stand to be erased, making room for the more modern terminology. This would facilitate the introduction of equal adoption rights for gay couples in the French legal system, The Telegraph reports.

French Minister of Justice Christiane Taubira was quoted expressing her support for equal adoption rights.

“Who is to say that a heterosexual couple will bring a child up better than a homosexual couple, that they will guarantee the best conditions for the child's development?,” she said.

The Catholic Church is strongly opposing this decision. “Gay marriage would herald a complete breakdown in society,” Cardinal Philippe Barbarin responded.

Representatives of the church argue that passing this law is tantamount to dissolving family values and, as a result, creating anarchy. He views it as a loophole for incest and polygamy to be introduced to French society.

"This could have innumerable consequences. Afterward they will want to create couples with three or four members. And after that, perhaps one day the taboo of incest will fall," he argued.

Pope Benedict XVI himself had put his foot down. He has stated that he is trying to put a stop to an initiative that would promote what the Catholic Church sees as a “defective” model for family life.

“The family that is the foundation of social life is threatened in many places, following a concept of human nature that has proven defective,” the Pope stated.
