Easy Modes Are Ruining Games, Assassins Creed 3 Developers Believe

Two of the developers behind the upcoming Assassin’s Creed 3 action adventure game believe that games nowadays aren’t experienced the right way on Easy mode, as the lowered difficulty makes important mechanics, like taking cover in a shooter, unnecessary.

While games have been getting easier and easier in the last few years, in order to accommodate inexperienced players and to draw in more people, Assassin’s Creed III’s Creative Director Alex Hutchinson doesn’t approve of implementing easy modes into interactive experiences nowadays.

"A lot of games have been ruined by easy modes," he told Edge magazine. "If you have a cover shooter and you switch it to easy and you don’t have to use cover, you kind of broke your game. You made a game that is essentially the worst possible version of your game."

Hutchinson even exemplifies his position by applying the concept of an easy mode to a book, saying that, "It’s like if I picked up a book and it said, 'Do you want the easy version or the complicated version?' [Game designers] can simplify the language, you know; we can make it two syllables."

Assassin’s Creed 3’s Lead Gameplay Designer, Steven Masters, also commented on the issue, confirming that, while the core game won’t be impossible to defeat, its secondary objectives will definitely challenge players.

"We’ve got some missions like the reveal mission that was that big battle on bunker hill, thousands of NPCs on screen and such," he said.

"We can let you get through that pretty straightforwardly, but we can put a lot of constraints in like 'don’t take any damage when you’re coming down there' or 'assassinate the target without being detected'. When you’re standing in the middle of this incredibly fortified scenario it’s a serious stealth challenge. It’s really difficult and we’re going to challenge you on all of your different skills and abilities."

Assassin’s Creed 3 is going to be released this October, for PS3 and Xbox 360, in November for PC, and this winter for the Wii U.
