Check Out the Hatsune Miku Chrome Ad That Won Google Two Cannes Lions

Google has been ramping up advertising efforts lately, but it still runs very few ads compared to other companies its size. Chrome has been the one product that constantly gets new ads.

They're all quirky, funny and interesting, to varying degrees, but one in particular has been praised, granted, not one you've likely seen, as it was created by Google Japan.

A while ago, Google got together with Crypton, the company behind the virtual pop star/music creation software Hatsune Miku/Vocaloid 2, to promote creativity on the web.

Since anyone can create new Hatsune Miku songs, the ad focuses on just this aspect. The song can come from anyone but then anyone else can also contribute, fan videos, cover versions and so on, the perfect example of user-generated content and shared culture.

The campaign had the desired effect and spurred a lot of people to contribute. The ad above highlights that engagement.

The ad won two prizes at the famous Cannes Lions festival, one of them for "best use or integration of user-generated content."
