Black Ops 2 Multiplayer Lead Is Ready to Nerf Perks to Maintain Balance


One of the leading developers working on Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has revealed that the team is ready to nerf perks after the game is out, in order to make sure that the game experience remains balanced in the long run.

David Vondehaar, who is the leader of multiplayer development at Treyarch, told CVG that, “Perks were pretty important for us to rethink, because they were getting too complex. You had perks, perk pros, perks that influence you, perks that influence your gun, perks that influence team mates.”

One of the goals of the team working on Black Ops 2 was to simplify the whole system and make it easier for players to choose those perks they are interested in and then use them effectively on the battlefield.

Vonderhaar added, “I can nerf perks and I will, mark my words. A perk should never be something you need just to compete. A perk is ‘I got a parking spot,’ or ‘the soda machine gave me free soda.’ Your life shouldn’t depend on it. The community helped me understand that, and that’s why our new system has no absolutes. We can try to make it the most balanced CoD ever.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 introduces a new Create-a-Class mode which allows a player to pick ten of the weapons, mods and perks that he likes in the game and create his own multiplayer setup with no hassle so that he can then quickly jump directly into the game.

The multiplayer modes are the heart of the Call of Duty series and the development teams at both Treyarch and Infinity Ward are very careful when it comes to maintaining the challenge and the balance of the games.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be launched on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 on November 13.
