BioWare Details Link Between Classes and Virtues for Ultima Forever

Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar was one of the most surprising game announcements of 2012, and the team at BioWare working on the game is eager to talk about the way it will use the long running game universe and how it will update its mechanics to appeal to the modern gamer.

Jeff Skalski, who is a franchise producer working on Ultima, told VG247 that, “We know we can’t make all Ultima fans happy, but we hope they can enjoy the nostalgic elements that are clear nods to the past and new components introduced as we usher in the series to a whole new connected generation of players. We’re aiming for more stimulation over simulation.”

The developer also offered information on the eight virtues that sit at the heart of the Ultima concept, saying that they determine the path that players will take through the game by opening up additional content and by closing down certain paths.

Skalski talked about the link between virtues and classes, adding, “Each class has its own unique playing style. I’d rather avoid at this time getting too much into the details, but let’s just say abilities across classes complement each other. Part of the fun is to figure out your build and the best way to match them with group mates for some dominating combinations.”

The BioWare team working on Ultima Forever says that it has recruited a number of long-term fans of the franchise for its first alpha test and that they were impressed with what they saw.

The developer says that BioWare will not include a traditional energy system in Ultima Forever, in order to force gamers to pay for more actions.

He offered no further details on how the company will monetize the game.

Ultima Forever is set to launch before the end of the year on the PC and iPad before the end of 2012.
