Amazon Is Now the World's Largest Web Host with 118,000 Servers

The latest Netcraft report on web servers and hostnames uncovered quite a few interesting things. On top of that list though is the fact that Amazon is now the world's biggest web host by the number of servers they provide.

Amazon is now using 118,000 web-facing servers, surpassing the previous leader, China Telecom which has 116,000.

Amazon's Web Services is the largest cloud services provider in the world so the fact that it's running more than 100,000 servers shouldn't be much of a surprise.

Also not surprising is that all of these servers only host a relatively small number of sites, 6.8 million.

That's because Amazon's cloud infrastructure is used for more than just hosting websites, for one, for example for computing complex tasks, but also because the sites that do use Amazon tend to be large.
